Dickensian Moments

Wednesday, October 27th, 2010

Mick’s been watching the DVD adaptations, Oliver Twist finished this week, Nicholas Nickleby next! Rachel’s just finished David Copperfield and Pauline and family visited the Charles Dickens museum in Bloomsbury last weekend as part of the very successful Bloomsbury Festival.

What amazes us is that his characters and descriptions are as much a part of London today as they were part of his novels. He certainly worked hard and played hard! And what a legacy.

Harvesting Thoughts

Wednesday, October 20th, 2010

We’re thinking apples here as we enjoy the Autumn sunshine and our apples from the farmer’s produce store here in Greenwich on October Wednesdays. You can bob down to Borough Market this Sunday for Apple Day too.

We at Hide All eat Cox’s, Russets, red apples from farmer’s markets and then it’s anything crunchy!

But there’s nothing like apple crumble, apple pie and apple cake. But whose recipe is best? Pauline is a committed Nigel Slater fan, for Rachel it’s Jamie Oliver, Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall is Louise’s choice, Jane favours Raymond Blanc and Mick’s well known for his love of Delia.

Live Theatre at The Scoop

 the-scoop-at-tower.jpg

The Scoop will be hosting a series of free theatre events throughout the summer, showcasing new revivals of classic stage productions. Theatre buffs can enjoy live theatre performances in a relaxed atmosphere, with a picnic and a bottle of something refreshing to go with.

 toad_seeoriginalforcredit1.jpg

This summer’s family offering, Toad Hall, centres on Toad, the famous character from Kenneth Grahame’s popular story who wants to be more famous than he already is. This light-hearted production intends to make full use of its outdoor setting as the Thames becomes the riverbank of the story and nearby City Hall becomes Toad’s precious home. Puppets and music help bring this story to life!!

And if that is not your cup of tea they are also offering Don Juan in Love. A José Zorrilla play about the philandering Don Juan, who is a devil with the ladies and a demon with a blade. With raucous comedy and swash-buckling adventure, The Steam Industry’s production is a fast-paced new version for the city to thoroughly enjoy.

So after visiting Hide All why not pop down and have a look; we certainly will be!

Polo and Pimms- A Very English Sunday

Friday, July 30th, 2010

It was a victory for England at the Cartier Cup 2010 when they played New Zealand on Sunday. The pimms was flowing and the sun was shining as England dominated the field.

 polo2.jpg

The earlier match between Hurlingham and the Prince of Wales’s team was also a spectacular sight to be seen with an energetic five Chukka match. As he relaxed in the Royal enclosure, we are sure though a good game Prince Charles was disappointed to see his team defeated.

Tower Bridge Jane really enjoyed her day out with friends and has been reading up on the history of polo. So we thought we would share a small polo fact with you all involving the Hurlingham team that she saw.

Polo Fact

In the mid 19th century an Irishman, Captain John Watson, of the British Cavalry 13th Hussars, created the first set of written rules for playing polo. In 1874 the Hurlingham Rules were created. They limited the number of players to five on a team and included the offside rule.

Charlton at the World Cup

Friday, June 18th, 2010

Said Pauline to Mick last Friday night, “Are there any Charlton players here at the World Cup 2010?”.

“Oh no!” replied Mick.

“That must say something” thought Pauline. But… there are!

And what a week we Charlton fans working at Hide All have had. Up to 7 players (thinks Mick, or 6 for Pauline and Nick!). The highlight being the Denmark game last Monday - what a surprise. Answers at the end of this blog…

And… Charlton community scheme was discussed extensively on BBC Radio 5 Live this morning, the template for Ajax Cape Town community scheme - how proud we are! Well done Jason Morgan.
